Off to Market

The Cape Winelands are well known for their elegant wine farms, award-winning restaurants and jaw-dropping landscapes. But for the traveller looking to sample a little of everything the winelands have to offer in a single morning, there’s no better destination than one of the region’s ever-popular markets.

Offering up a range of artisanal fare and locally produced crafts, the Cape Winelands’ markets are perhaps some of the country’s finest, highly sought-after by both young and old every weekend.

More than just a showcase of wares, these markets offer live music, plentiful wine sampling opportunities and serene surrounds, encapsulating all the traveller must-haves in a single, atmospheric space.

Of course, not all markets are created equal, which is why we’ve put together a handy guide to some of our favourites in Franschhoek and surrounds.

Blaauwklippen Family Market

Famous for both its wines and its acclaimed weekly market, Blaauwklippen Wine Estate is the perfect place to while away a lazy Sunday in the winelands. The beautiful vineyards lend themselves to a meandering afternoon of browsing, with a variety of fresh produce and a selection of craft, fashion and jewellery on offer.

Expect to be serenaded by live music as you relax on the lawns with a glass of Blaauwklippen’s best, while the kids are entertained in the play area.

Stellenbosch Slow Market

Stellenbosch’s slow food market, which features over 100 producers, artisans and craftsmen, has fast become the leading gourmet food market in the Cape.
